Arsenal Legend Petit: I don't see Arsenal blood on the pitch

With the club failing to qualify for any European Competition after decades, one of their finest legends has spoken honestly regarding the club’s status.

What did Emmanuel Petit say?

Speaking to The Sun, E. Petit said, "I don't recognise this club anymore, I don't see the Arsenal blood on the pitch.

"It's not the question of money because Arsenal have the power to put £70million on a player if they want to.

"It's a question of profile - who do you want for your team in terms of character and quality?

"What are Arsenal doing in the transfer market? I don't understand it. They spend money - a lot of money sometimes - but on the wrong player."

"To be honest, I'm not really convinced - for four, five, six years now - with 60 per cent of the team.

"This is a turning point for Arsenal, they are at the end of the world. They need to take the right direction or else they'll drop, drop and drop again and it'll be more difficult for them to attract players.

"You need to be more efficient in the transfer market because Arsenal cannot rely on academy players.

"With all the respect I have for (Bukayo) Saka and (Emile) Smith Rowe - they have been playing brilliantly, especially Saka - but the other players - the experienced players - what have they brought to the team since they've arrived?

"Ask yourself the question and try to get the answer with honesty. You have to look at yourself in the mirror."

What to expect from Arsenal next season?

Arsenal had one of their worst seasons ever. Their first season under M. Arteta Amatriain was expected to go much better than how it did. At one point during the season, they were genuine contenders for relegation. However, a shock win against Chelsea was probably the turning point as they ended up finishing 8th in the Premier League. The only positive from the whole season was the stunning breakthrough of B. Saka and E. Smith Rowe.

Arsenal are linked with some exciting talents this summer, and Norwich City's Buendia could be an Arsenal player next season. E. Buendía is a creative player who is being tracked by Arsenal for a couple of years now.

Everything transfer target is harder to get for Arsenal because of their absence in European competitions. Players would prefer to join Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, West Ham United and Manchester United than Arsenal due to the European factor.

Their recruitment will have to be smart, and they will have to make sure that the new arrivals adjust to the League quickly. Arteta has at times shown that he has got the skillset to build a decent team, and he deserves more time.

Overall, Arsenal cannot have another season like they did this season. A top-six finish should be a must; otherwise, Arteta could be under serious pressure.
