Manchester City statement
It’s fantastic news. We’ve seen all of the talking points everybody was raising about Pep Guardiola, the players’ futures, are they going to be able to play in the Champions League in the peak of their careers?
You’ve got to look at the club. Their stance on this was very strong on this right from the outset. They believe that they would get this overturned and they’ve done that. Moving forward now, hopefully we can see real strong progress with Manchester City and a fantastic ending in the Champions League this season.
The statement of UEFA
Uefa takes note of the decision taken by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to reduce the sanction imposed on Manchester City FC by Uefa’s independent Club Financial Control Body for alleged breaches of the Uefa Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations.
Uefa notes that the Cas panel found that there was insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold all of the CFCB’s conclusions in this specific case and that many of the alleged breaches were time-barred due to the five-year time period foreseen in the Uefa regulations.
Over the last few years, Financial Fair Play has played a significant role in protecting clubs and helping them become financially sustainable and Uefa and ECA remain committed to its principles.
The consequences to the decision about Manchester City
We can be sure about one fact. The verdict damages Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules for the future. Please keep in mind that the team still has to pay the 10 million Euro fine, but this won’t probably hurt them that much. The consequences of not being part of the European competitions for the next 2 years could have been devastating for the next 5 or more years.
This is however not important now. Or is it? No matter which English city you are from, this decision is a big win for the English football. On the other hand this case will have a big impact on the behaviour of many clubs in the future. We can agree on one thing, what the club did was not really ethical.
