Manchester United should keep Cavani over spending big money on Haaland or Kane, says Hargreaves

What did Hargreaves say?

Speaking to BT Sport, [player 767] said, “You’ve got to keep him, he’s fabulous. I think, first of all, he’s a great goal scorer and his minutes per goal show that. He’s the best player at United for that.

“I think everyone would love to have [player 997] and [player 154421], but with Cavani there, you don’t have to go and spend £100 million on a player because if you spend it there, then there are other positions needed.

“They need a right-winger, they need a central midfielder, they need a centre-back. With Cavani there, he’s almost an insurance policy and you can go and spend it on three other players in important positions.

“I think if Cavani played the whole of next season, then he could easily get you 25 goals, with the other boys. Just as a mentor for Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and (Anthony) Martial – he’s perfect. I would 100% keep him and invest the money in other positions.”

What is the situation with Cavani?

The Uruguayan has overall been a very appreciated signing around Europe. [team 14] got him in the summer after he left [team 591]. Since then, he has been a major influence on and off the pitch. The likes of [player 20333643] and [player 1829] are reportedly learning a lot from [player 96088] in training. His movement, timing of the runs and finishing has seen him become PSG’s highest ever goalscorer.

In the [league 8] this season, he has made 20 appearances, out of which only 11 have come as starts. He has scored 7 goals and provided 2 assists in that time. Not a bad return from a 34-year-old with his first season in the world’s toughest league.

Apart from goals, pundits and United fans have been impressed with his work rate off the ball. His pressing, tracking back, and vocal presence is a massive difference between him and other strikers at the club. Martial has continuously frustrated fans with his lack of hunger and ineffective work rate off the ball. Also, the Frenchman’s movement is no way near to Cavani’s movement in the box.

Fans are extremely happy with Greenwood’s progress over the last eighteen months. However, as a central striker, his physicality is not enough to hold up the ball, which is an important attribute in the Premier League.

Cavani provides them with a stronger dimension against sides with a low block. His excellent aerial ability and hold-up-play allow them to break low blocks. When Martial or Greenwood play down the middle, United don’t seem to have any target man to get balls off him in and around the box.

Should Man United keep him?

With everything mentioned and explained above, it seems a no brainer for United to keep him for another year at least. Not only that will help the youngsters at the club to learn from him, but it also allows the club to invest in some other areas. The red devils need a centre-back, a defensive midfielder more importantly than a striker at this point.

However, as much as United will want to keep him, there have been strong links that he might return to South America this summer. Multiple reports suggest that he wants to leave this summer.

Manchester United’s power to attract the best players has slightly decreased. If in this day and age, they can manage to re-sign Cavani and give him whatever he wants, then it will be a positive sign for their other potential targets.

With the red devils desperate for a proven goalscorer, their former midfielder has made it clear what should happen at the club.
