What was said?

Speaking to the club's website, M. Arteta Amatriain said, "This is great news for us. As manager of the club, speaking on behalf of the entire staff, it's a pleasure to work with Tierney.

"His quality, energy, commitment and professionalism, not only on matchdays, but every day in training are always at such a high level."

"Tierney gives us so much extra strength both defensively and offensively and it's great to know that he'll be with us for the long term.

"Since his move from Celtic, his work ethic and quality has ensured that he is already one of most exciting players in the Premier League and a hugely important part of our team, both on and off the pitch.

"I know all the fans will join me, the players and staff in looking forward to seeing Tierney playing in an Arsenal shirt for a few more years!"

Arsenal's director, Edu also spoke about it, saying, "We are so pleased to have agreed a new long-term deal with Kieran.

"Anyone who has seen him play will recognise very quickly that he is a player of huge ability, but I can tell you that he is also a player with a fantastic attitude and mentality.

"Kieran's new contract is not just about the present and next season, it's with a long-term vision and Kieran being an integral part of the future of the club."

How good has Tierney been for Arsenal?

K. Tierney was one of the best young players when he was at Celtic. A number of top European clubs were eyeing him due to his age as well as his massive potential. Liverpool were tracking him as a backup for his International teammate A. Robertson but ended up singing K. Tsimikas.

Due to L. Shaw's inconsistent fitness, Manchester United were also contacting his representatives for a potential move. However, Shaw began to gain fitness and is now probably his country's best left-back.

Manchester City, who have been without a recognized left-back for a few years now, were heavily interested. B. Mendy's fitness issues were not helping as J. Guardiola i Sala was keen to add a proper left-back. However, O. Zinchenko's emergence to the top has been sensational. The Ukrainian is a recognized midfielder but was used by Pep as an inverted full-back. Since then, they have not struggled in that position much.

Arsenal came in for him as their first-choice left-back S. Kolašinac was having fitness issues and was defensively not good enough. He was an exciting attacking weapon, but defensively he used to struggle. Arsenal made sure that they were efficient in their transfer talks with Celtic. Tierney was an Arsenal player in 2019 when U. Emery Etxegoien was their manager.

Last season under Arteta, Tierney was arguably Arsenal's best player. His pace, relentless energy and quality deliveries were some of Arsenal's primary attacking weapons. In a season where the club was going through its worst period in a long time, the young Scottsman was one of their biggest positives.

With Arsenal playing no European football next season, a major European club could have easily attracted Tierney. It was important for Arsenal to keep hold of one of their best players and possibly a future captain.
