Tuchel on why Chelsea signed Romelu Lukaku

Tuchel’s reasoning for the Lukaku signing

Tuchel explained the decision saying, “We have a strong bond and team mentality to help each other. We think Romelu, having always had Chelsea in his heart, is the perfect addition to our group. He embodies all that we’re proud of at this club.

“We spoke on the phone. Right now, he’s following protocol and quarantining for a few more days.

“Last season, we came fourth, not second, so there some bridges to be built to close the gaps. We had a very strong half a season with the group with a fantastic ending and now a very exciting start with a trophy at the beginning.

“We were looking for a certain profile and Romelu fits it. He likes to play physical, he’s comfortable playing with his back towards the goal, but he’s also very, very strong in using his speed and pace.

“Romelu has a variety of strengths. He’s strong in the air, he’ll give us a new power when we cross from the side. We don’t have to change our style of play to make him shine. He has a charisma, he is a good age, he’s a leader. Hopefully he can be a leader in our group.”

How much will Lukaku improve Chelsea?

[team 18] were relatively quiet in the window, but they have completed a stunning signing from [team 2930]. After being in disarray for the first half of last season, they ended it with a [league 2] trophy, beating domestic rivals [team 9] in the final.

[coach 523937]’s transformation of this Chelsea side has been magnificent. He made defensively unbreakable and improved the efficiency of their transitions. A typical German counter-pressing way was getting the best of these players in a 3-4-3 system.

However, despite the massive improvements, Chelsea missed a lot of chances throughout the season. Star signing [player 31823] was responsible for most of them, and a lot of his misses were sitters. Of course, it was his first season during covid as well, but some of his misses were inexcusable.

In the semi-final of the Champions League against [team 3468], Chelsea comfortably won the tie over two legs but missed plenty of clear chances. For a moment, it felt that the missed chances might come back to haunt them, but they did enough to progress. In the final against City, they won by a single goal, but it could have been three of four if they took their chances. Werner missed two sitters in the first half before [player 32612] gave them the lead.

[player 995] will solve the finishing problem immediately. His movement and the quality of his finishing has kept improving for a few years now. With all the pace and creativity that Chelsea have in their team, Lukaku up front would be a deadly weapon. The likes of [player 537121], Havertz, [player 24288] and the wing-backs could create plenty for Lukaku, and we know he will finish more often than not.
