VfL Wolfsburg vs FC St Pauli match preview, team news and prediction

Action in the German Bundesliga continues with an exciting Matchday 25 fixture between VfL Wolfsburg and FC St Pauli. The match is scheduled to take place at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg on the 8th of March, 2025, with both teams hoping to get maximum points in the match.

After enduring a disappointing 2023/24 campaign, Wolfsburg have also had a decent start to the 2024/25 season. As of the time of writing, they are currently 10th in the Bundesliga standings, with 21 points gathered from their opening 14 games.

Die Wolfe have six wins, three draws and have lost five times this season in the Bundesliga. They endured a disappointing 2023/24 season failing to qualify for Europe, as they finished 12th on the table just four points above the drop zone.

In the summer, they brought in goalkeeper Kamil Grabara from FC Copenhagen and were also able to secure the services of center forward Mohamed Amoura from Union SG of Belgium. Center-forward Denis Vavro also joined the club on loan from Danish side FC Copenhagen.

High profile departures included experienced defender Maxence Lacroix, who joined Crystal Palace in the English Premier League, Maximilian Philipp who left to join SC Freiburg and Vaclav Cerny who moved to Rangers on a season long-loan deal.

Exciting striker Luca Waldschmidt also left the club at the end of his contract to join second division side Cologne, while Belgium goalkeeper Koen Casteels moved to Asia where he joined Saudi Arabian side Al Qadsiah on a free transfer after his contract at the club was not renewed.

They came into the season hoping to put the setback of the 2023/24 season behind them. However, it was always going to be an uphill task against a wounded Bayern Munich side. They were eventually beaten 3-2 at home by the Bundesliga giants.

However, they rose from that and grabbed their first league win of the season when they defeated newly-promoted Holstein Kiel 2-0 away from home.

Their most recent league match as of the time of writing was a 3-2 loss at Freiburg. It was quite a dramatic fixture, as Freiburg led the game 3-0 at some point. But Wolfsburg put on a spirited finish and scored twice in eight minutes to set up a frenetic end. However, Freiburg just managed to escape by the skin of their teeth and ran out with a 3-2 win.

On the other hand, St Pauli are back in the Bundesliga after 13 years away from the German top flight. They secured promotion for the first time since 2011 after topping the German second division. As of the time of this writing, they are currently 14th in the Bundesliga with 14 points from their first 15 games and are just four points above relegation. They have struggled to adapt to the demands of the big boys as they have only won three times in the German top flight this season. They have irked out two draws but have been defeated nine times so far in the league.

In the summer, St. Pauli were able to bring in defender Fin Stevens from Brentford, midfielder Robert Wagner joined on a season-long loan deal from Freiburg, while Scott Banks left Crystal Palace in the English Premier League to join the club after a successful loan stint.

Teenage winger Eric Moreira moved to Nottingham Forest in England, while other key departures included Marcel Hartel, Lica Gunther and Etienne Amenyido who all left the club.

They kicked off the season with a 2-0 loss at home to last season’s surprise package Heidenheim. Then they grabbed their first points of the campaign in a goalless draw at home to Red Bull Leipzig, before claiming a first league win of the season in a shock 3-0 win at Freiburg.

St Pauli’s last league outing was a hard-fought 1-0 away win at Stuttgart, as goal from Johannes Eggestein guided them to an incredible win on the road. In the German cup, they defeated Hallescher 3-2 in the first round before falling to a 4-2 defeat by RB Leipzig in the second round.

The past five games between both sides have yielded four draws and a single victory for St Pauli. And the first meeting between both sides earlier in the season ended in a goalless draw at the Millerntor stadion in St Pauli.
